Wine Review | Moko Hills Pinot Noir | 2021

Grapes are grown with Moko Hills, the living entity, in mind. Donald, owner and winemaker, aspires to make wines truly reflective of this special place – wines which signify a tribute to the land; and the flora and fauna that call Moko Hills home. All wines are made using gentle, minimalist winemaking techniques. Hand harvested grapes, minimal extraction, wild yeast fermentation and 100% oak aging. A bottling of time and place, and all the coming and goings of the year past.

Artwork was created by the talented Rachel Walker. Each wine has a unique art piece, representing a group of species that embodies the encapsulated wine’s characteristics. A homage to these species and a promise of protection.

The 2021 Pinot Noir has a light to dark plum colour with aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries, blackberries, earthy mushroom and herbaceous notes, followed on the palate with earthy kanuka and wildflower and minerality, opening on the deep red fruits, good tannin structure and balanced acidity, ending in a long finish. There is a definite sense of place when you drink this wine.

This wine will go well with crispy skin sous vide duck breast and mulled wine jus served with swiss chard and blackberries.
